The second such job cuts this month, now 4,000 more.
SCHAUMBURG, ILL. - Motorola Inc. , the world's No. 2 mobile phone maker, said today that it will cut about 4,000 jobs because of the slowing economy and will record first- and second-quarter charges for the layoffs.

The Schaumburg, Ill.-based company said the layoffs, the second such action this month, will be made in the Networks Sector. where Motorola employs 140,000 employees worldwide and ranks behind Finland's Nokia in cell phone production.

"Motorola is making tough but deliberate and strategic business decisions in order to remain competitive in the slowing economy. Unfortunately, reductions have been necessary for us to improve financial performance, and this is something that we will have to continually evaluate as we monitor market and economic conditions," Edward D. Breen, president of Motorola's Networks Sector, said in a statement.
