Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), the world's second largest microchip maker behind Intel, says their on track to achieve their stated goal of a 30 percent global market share by year-end, a company official said on Tuesday.

AMD and Intel have long been fighting it out for market share, and slowly each year AMD has been closing the gap. AMD has also just introduced their AMD Athlon MP processor which is their first entry into the Server Market (the MP stands for MultiProcessor). The AMD Athlon MP motherboards and CPU's are already for sale on the market, debuting at 1.2 GigaHertz and $265 for each CPU.

AMDs' recent entry into the multiprocessor workstation/server markets should allow for their extra 9% Market Share gain.

"We are on track to meet our corporate objective of market share of 30 percent by the end of this year," said Wee Yep Yin, a marketing manager at AMD Far East Ltd in Singapore this Tuesday at the Malaysian launch of its first processor designed for servers and workstations.

"We are seeing a good sign that we are pretty much in that range across the world," he said.

He said revenue could grow modestly despite expectations of an industry-wide decline of up to 15 percent. "We are expecting a modest revenue growth in 2001," Wee said, without elaborating.

Sales at AMD rose nine percent to US$1.19 billion for the first three months from a year ago and in the same period posted higher-than-expected net income of $124.8 million compared with $189.3 million previously.
