Global Crossing completes a final connection in the Americas...
Global Crossing completed their final connection between Lima, Peru, and its South American backbone this Thursday. Fiber-optic carrier Global Crossing announced it had finished linking its core multicontinental network among 27 countries in Europe, North America, South America, and Asia.

Although most fiber capacity goes unused right now, Global Crossing executives point to a bandwidth bottleneck under the oceans, predicting a capacity shortage between continents and along sections of long-haul networks within the next few years.

Global Crossing isn't the only one laying Fiber under the oceans, Alcatel bought their own fleet of ships to do such a thing, and are laying more fiber than anyone else under the oceans with their 6 ships.

"In today's environment, nobody else will be able to build a network of this scope for years to come," Tom Casey, Global Crossing's chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Global Crossing continues to build a previously announced Asian extension to its long-haul network to connect Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines to the global network, according to Global Crossing's statement. The company expects the extension to be complete in the first quarter of next year.
