From 22 inches deep to 11, new CRT's will come.
Sarnoff, the former RCA Laboratories and inventor of the color television, said Friday the technology is a fundamental advance on cathode-ray tube monitors, also known as CRTs, which were invented more than 100 years ago.

It seems like a long time to reach such a breakthrough in CRT's regarding their size and weight. We do however have LCD's and Flat Panel Plasma TV's on the market now. With CRT's, even a 27 Inch color TV weighs 80+ pounds.

Sarnoff plans to change all of this, because, even though LCD's are becoming cheaper, CRT's still dominate the monitor Marketshare. Making CRT's smaller, and lighter is a smart thing to do.

Flat Panel Displays will inevitibly end the sale of heavy and deep CRT's, but it could still take a few more years.

Sarnoff said the new CRT technology, called S-Cubed, can shrink the depth of 32-inch displays from 22 inches to 11 inches. Sarnoff says they can actually make the CRT's smaller while making the picture quality better. More so, Sarnoff said manufacturers of CRT's can use their existing assembly lines, however with a 10-15% increase in production costs.

It is likely that Sony, as well as other High-End CRT makers will adapt the technology even though the higher cost, just to beat the slow dropping price of Plasma Displays. Sarnoff did not announce any agreements to this effect yet.

The S-Cubed technology works according to Sarnoff by bending beams of electrons in a way that allows the electron gun, which shoots out the beams, to be moved closer to the screen. This also actually has the side effect of making a better picture quality.
