I want it now please.
This technology is simply cool. It has all the futuristic feel of a Communicator, but it's not quite a hologram.
Sarnoff, formerly RCA Laboratories is featuring the above on their Feature Page. It is a flexible plastic and Thin Liquid Crystal Display.
A first of it's kind, Sarnoff says: "We’re in a multimedia era and people expect information displays to handle video," notes Michael Kane, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Sarnoff. "Our prototype proves that we can bring video capability to a thin, flexible display."
Utilizing plastic, and active matrix in a thin film transistor array, the technology can operate fast enough to provide video and crisp enough to provide wide screen. It's extremely light and flexible making it suited for many many applications.
More durable than sandwiched between glass - because it's plastic. Essentially, these displays could be "printed" on plastic like a newspaper press prints on paper, greatly reducing manufacturing costs.
With Sarnoff saying it could be 2-5 years before full production though, we may have to wait and see if something better comes along. This could however very well be the price reduction LCD's need to overtake CRT's in the display market.
