Netscape upgrade, just for Windows XP

In an agressive move, America Online upgrades Netscape, just for Windows XP.
America Online has finally shown interest in owning Netscape, they've upgraded it just for the new Windows XP.

The irony here is that, America Online just released version 7.0, and it still uses Internet Explorer v5.5.

The company is touting better integration with Windows XP for the new browser, which includes several new features and minor fixes. When WinXP users set Netscape as their default e-mail application and browser, they can view the number of new e-mail messages in the Windows XP start-up screen. Netscape Mail can also embed itself in XP's contextual right-click menus so it can be used to e-mail attachments without the need to first open the application. This right click feature is found in many Windows Email Applications.

While Netscape says version 6.2, it's really based on the open source "Mozilla" project, and the 0.9.4 code base, that's sub v1.0 for all you non-programmers. This essentially means that, although Netscape is version 6.2, it's core is really a less than version 1, essentially showing how neglected it is by America Online.

Netscape, once the dominant browser company, is one of several competitors continuing to challenge the dominance of Microsoft's Internet Explorer which now enjoys 80%+ Browser market share. With IE running the majority, Netscape has really been long forgotten, and it's now Netscape who needs to catch up, not Microsoft, which is demonstrated in many of the top web-sites which don't run correctly using Netscape.
